hygge

I first saw this word when I was browsing Pinterest + got curious, so I did some research…

The Oxford Dictionary defines it as “a quality of coziness + comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.” It comes from a 16th century Norwegian term “hugga” which means “to comfort” or “to console.” Unfortunately there is no English word to describe hygge but several can be used to describe the idea such as coziness, charm, happiness, contentness, security, familiarity, comfort, and simpleness. Hygge is explained by Meik Wiking who wrote The Little Book of Hygge where he described it as being “humble + slow.” He further explained, “Hygge is about an atmosphere + an experience, rather than about things. It is about being with the people we love, a feeling of home.”

Originating in Denmark it’s no wonder they are dubbed the happiest people in the world, I would be too if I was present in the moment wrapped in coziness surrounded by those I love dear all the time. Having been born + raised in Utah I’m all too familiar with rough winters, but if this Danish quality can bring some joy to winter then sign me up! It sounds wonderful!

So… how the heck do you Hygge?

Hygge is really whatever you want it to be, there are no rules. The hygge practice involves mindfulness, coziness + nourishment so find what fuels your soul.

  1. Create a cozy atmosphere – brings that feeling of warmth
    • Snuggle with a fluffy blanket
    • Sit by the fireplace
    • Light candles
    • Put on twinkle lights
  2. Put on your comfies + relax
    • Wear a comfy sweater
    • Wear thick cozy socks
    • Take a nap
    • Go to bed early
  3. Participate in simple pleasures
    • Dust off that good book
    • Write a letter
    • Feel the sand
  4. Create a safe space for you + friends. Build togetherness
    • Bake
    • Board games
    • No drama
    • Eat around the table
  5. Be present
    • Be thankful
    • Watch the sunset
    • Take a walk
    • Turn off the TV

This is my favorite attempt at hygge-ing – I set my frustrations and anything that was emotionally overwhelming to the side to enjoy the warmth of my heater and cup of coffee in hand wrapped in my cozy sweater and socks. Yup, this is definitely something I can get used to.
